Cheapest Altfuel Vehicles
Purpose
If you want to test alternative fuel vehicles privately or as fleet manager you might profit from those hints. Often it needs some trial before fleet managers are purchasing larger quantities. With the mentioned vehicles you may do a first step, or you may stay with them- because small vehicles do emit less CO
2
by definition. With alternative propulsion even more.
Disclaimer
Don't be afraid the manufacturers are using funny terms which do not express technical facts. "Natural" may be misleading because the cars are using fossil natural gas. Not every "hybrid" vehicle has a hybrid electric power train which enables it to run at zero emission.
And last but not least special rebates may put the list upside down or you are not allowed buying the alternative fuel car from the official brand resale point in your country.
The prices were extracted from the
SWISS Autoumweltliste
(plugin). This list is a nearly perfect tool but it was made for Switzerland having vehicles for that market. Some newer vehicles may be found only searching the web. Announcements may also be found in our
news section
.
Natural Gas/CNG
The cheapest CNG vehicle is the Fiat Panda Natural Power, but the Ford Ka CNG is not really a lot more expensive.
Ethanol/E85
The cheapest E85 vehicle is the Renault Clio 1.2 E85.
Biodiesel
The Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 are the cheapest vehicles from PSA which may be run with B30.
Hybrid Electric
The cheapest full HEV is the Honda Civic. Honda intends to bring a cheaper hybrid on the market in 2009
source
.
Here we don't count the microhybrids - having mostly start'n stop automatic (even if the names given by the producers are misleading like for the C4 Hybrid HDi which is
no HEV
). For Start'n Stop automatic the Daihatsu Cuore Eco is the cheapest. But the smart mhd is not a lot more expensive. Then follows the CITROËN 1.4 16V SensoDrive Stop&Start. So far no HEV nor MHD cars with diesel engines are available on the market.
Battery Electric
It is not so easy to find a high volume model being in the lists since the transition to LithiumIOn batteries takes some time. 2009 you will be able to choose from the Subaru R1e, the Th!nk and may be others. Today its best to buy a used Peugeot 106 electrique or a Microcar like the Indian GWiz or one from NiceCar converting a French model.
Total Cost of Ownership
Comparing the different propulsion concept, the subsidies and taxes, insurance and energy costs have to be considered. In every country the subsidies and taxes are different but one may say that hybrid electric and battery electric will get most subsidies but also CNG. Battery electric vehicles will have the lowest running costs including also reduced parking fees.
